I really like this new forum set up. I will be updating this with pictures in the near future.

I have been working on this project for a while now. I had to put it aside for a while due to work and space, but have recently been moving forward rapidly. It will not be long now!

The plane will have a 123 inch wing span with a spinner to rudder measurement of 109-110 inches. It has a DA150 for power with MTW110K cannisters on the exhaust. I have had carbon fiber mains made for it and puchased an RCBlimp carbon V2 tailwheel. It will be running DS8711 on all surfaces.

Target weight should be between 38 and 40 pounds. These first two pictures are of the frame up of the fuse. The fuse was built upside down on a 32" by 80" table for size comparison. Will add more soon as the build is much farther along than this.

Here are a couple more pictures.

I wanted a tube for the wires to the rear of the plane, so I rolled my own out of 1/64 light ply.

Here is one way I used to check the set up of the stabs to rudder. It is a cross laser on a tripod. I played with the white balance to get the laser to show up better in the picture.

I decided to pre bevel the hinge areas before putting them on the surfaces. I matched and center marked the wood, pre-drilled it and beveled it on my band saw.
Here are a couple of shots of the cannister installation. It is made to be removed if required for service or repair. The mounts bolt in place and the covers are also bolted on after the install.
Welcome Drakien

the new forms are great

glad to see new members huge plane and an extra 300 at that sweet !!

keep up the posts

thanks falcon
Thanks Falcon,

I have been out of town for a couple of weeks, but have managed to get a few more things done on the airplane. The cowling is almost fitted. It takes some time because it is a two piece cowl. You can take out 8 button head screws and uncover the motor for service. I will upload some more pictures soon. I am starting to fit servos and hard points now. I hope the weather warms up a bit soon because I need to do some painting to get the fuse and hatch ready for covering. My goal is to have this beast flying by April so it will have some time on it before this years Joe Nall.
sounds like me BUSY

Busy makes the money for the other things we like to do Smile

The first painting that needs to be done is in the fuse, motor box and hatch/canopy area. That will get a very light coat of grey primer and then a light coat of speckle paint. I have a couple brands that I will be testing for the finish I want. I have some RustOleum and some Stone Creations so far. This gives a neat look and sets off the components. It is also a little protection in the event of a fuel leak without adding a lot of weight. Here is a thread on another forum where a guy has up some pictures of planes he has done. I first tried it on a Cub I built a year ago and liked the results.

As far as the color goes, that is the wild card. I have found that the "color matching paint" that is sold for specific covering is not close a lot of times. It can be several shades off. We are not talking about a lot of paint. Getting a paint supplier to mix small quantities can be a challenge. They have the spectrum gun to be able to match to the covering you have used but if they want to mix you quarts or gallons, you end up with a lot of waste and cost. Due to this, I may farm out the actual color paint work to a body shop. Still have not made up my mind. I do not have an actual booth. I have found that if you control dust in a garage and filer the air you can get good results with base clear and fast dry times. Low dust settle and the clear can be buffed to take out any light dust in the finish.

Man, answering this from New York when I cannot be working on the plane is a bummer. I talked to a guy today in Florida while I was driving about making custom aluminum control horns for me. He has a Killer tail wheel that is really looking good. $80 but it is really engineered properly. He built race cars for years and it shows.... Can you say BLING!
try unicoat in hagerstown for a paint supplier near hospital ,that is who i use anyway .when i do my cars ,but that been ages ago when i painted you had 3 choices now theres to many

they make spray can so to speak ,or you can try a touch up gun

what they did for me. my wife backed into my falcon in the driveway ( i was up set ) the person I got the car from had given me paint with it .10 years later had to replaced the fender ,grill ,stone guard the paint was old
they remix the paint for me able to paint the fender matched perfect! credit to them and prayer
been to several car shows since cannot tell ( sorry got on another rabbit trail again )

sounds like you know what your doing anyway
falcon
I just wanted to put up some pictures of that tail wheel I found. Under 3 oz and engineered to the max. This guy makes nice stuff.

I hope to have some updated pictures for you of the Dalton by the end of the week. The basic mounting of the cowl is done and I am starting to fit the air dam in front of the cylinder heads. I need to find someone with a large band saw to help make the cuts on the ailerons. The wings are too big for my saw.
Don't ya hate when your tools aren't big enough!!!!!

Very cool tailwheel...Keep finding this stuff so I don't have to look very hard when it's my turn.... Smile
It was fun seeing everyone in Lebanon today. Cool

Danny, that is a nice little plane you picked up today Tongue

I came home and decided to get some more done on the Dalton. I have all the hard points set in the tail surfaces now. The canopy is nearly fitted. I started fitting the cowl as well.

HEY! Watch it! I have a big prop!

I am feeling so used in this relationship. You get to find the next bling peice!
Don't cha hate when you bust on "little" Danny and he's not even in here to hear it....

He's been regretting not picking up that Yak since he left Lebanon...Poor Guy!!! NOT!!!
Yea, I bet. That Yak was sweet, and a great price.

I tried to explained it TO him, but I could not undetstand it FOR him.......

Hehe

I received a few more goodies for the Dalton this week. I will get some pictures up soon. The spinner is uber cool. All my SWB arms are aquired, as is the ignition cut off (SmartFly), the last of the 8711s, the RX and some small parts.

Have any of you made up your own leads before? I picked up wire and ends with the thought of giving it a go.

I made the cut on the first aileron today as well. Wooot, talk about nervous. It came out straight so I am happy.
I have still been working on this bird as time allows. Between travel and things to do, it is like snatching cat naps.

I made the cuts on both ailerons and capped them. Here are shome shots of the left wing

I have all the servos now and most of the power system. The spinner and pilot came in as well. Hinge the right aileron and fit the pilot then it will be a matter of preinstalling all the hardware. After that it is paint and covering.
Well, I am waiting for a few things, but that does not stop a little covering action.

First the bottom of the stabs......

Looking good. You done yet or what? It's time to fly. Winter's over...

Hey BTW Nice Pilot with a conehead. Is that a Dan look alike? Blaghhh.
Still working on the covering. The tops of the stabs are covered and I have the bottom of the left wing completed.

I think the wife is related to Wilson on Tim Taylors show. She keeps hiding her face. Smile
Very cool. Nice job so far onthe covering. That tail feather has the wingspan of most of the glow planes in the club!!

Hey Dan wants to know if you can come and recover his new plane??
